About the Book
On the 16th of August 2012 the South African Police Services opened fire on striking Lonmin mineworkers, in Marikana, in the North West province, killing 34 workers. The mineworkers were demanding a salary increase of R12 500. Lonmin, a British company, is the third largest platinum mining company in the world. The deaths of the striking miners have become known as the Marikana Massacre, and sparked outrage and debate within South Africa and beyond.
This edition of the Documents of the Social Movements brings together the responses and statements from civil society organisations and social movements in South Africa and internationally, to the Marikana massacre. A special edition on Marikana is an important contribution to a timely debate on the nature and future of South Africa’s democracy.
About the Author
Khanya College is an independent non-governmental organisation based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Established in 1986, the primary aim of Khanya College is to assist various constituencies within working class and poor communities to respond to the challenges posed by the forces of economic and political globalisation.
