About the Author
Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa was born in Johannesburg on 17 November 1952 and was elected deputy president of the African National Congress (ANC) in 2012. He was detained several times for his anti-apartheid activities in his youth but still obtained a law degree from the University of South Africa.
He became a trade unionist and co-founded the National Union Mineworkers in 1982. He was elected secretary-general of the ANC after its unbanning in 1991 at the same time when Nelson Mandela was elected its president. He became the chairman of the Constitutional Assembly, which drafted South Africa�s world-renowned constitution.
In 1996 Ramaphosa joined the world of business and established the Shanduka Group, a diversified holding company. He served on a number of company boards before returning to a politics full-time in 2010 and was appointed deputy president of South Africa in 2014.
