About the Book

In January 2007 the World Social Forum came to Africa for the first time. The WSF is a gathering of social movements, NGOs, CBOs and individuals, which began in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre in 2001. This book follows these movements and activists’ experiences of the WSF. From engagements that took place in South Africa about how to ensure that the WSF’s encounter on African soil reflects the presence and aspirations of grassroots activists, to how these movements forged links with similar movements in Kenya, the book reflects on how these movements and activists analysed and understood the WSF in Nairobi as a political space, and as a space to build a world free of neoliberalism, poverty and injustice.
